Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting people of all ages. Although it is especially common during the teenage years, acne can continue into adulthood or even develop for the first time later in life. Breakouts most commonly appear on the face, chest, shoulders, and back, where the skin contains a higher concentration of oil-producing glands.

Acne can range from occasional clogged pores to persistent inflammatory breakouts. Understanding the type and severity of acne is important when determining the most effective treatment and helping reduce the risk of acne scars and changes in skin pigmentation.

Types of Acne

What Causes Acne?

Acne can appear in several different forms, including:

  • Whiteheads and Blackheads (Comedones): These develop when pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Whiteheads occur when the pore remains closed, while blackheads develop when the clogged pore is open at the surface.

  • Papules and Pustules: These are inflammatory acne lesions that may appear red, swollen, tender, or filled with pus. More significant inflammation can increase the likelihood of discoloration or permanent scarring.

  • Nodules and Cysts: Deeper forms of inflammatory acne can develop beneath the surface of the skin and may be painful. These types of breakouts have a greater risk of causing acne scars and often benefit from professional dermatologic treatment.

Your skin contains sebaceous glands, which naturally produce an oil called sebum. Normally, sebum travels through the hair follicle to the surface of the skin.

Acne develops when a hair follicle becomes clogged with a combination of excess oil and dead skin cells. Bacteria and inflammation can also contribute to the development of more noticeable or painful breakouts.

Several factors may contribute to acne, including hormonal changes, genetics, certain medications, skincare products, and increased oil production.

Picking, squeezing, or scratching acne lesions can increase inflammation and damage the surrounding skin, potentially increasing the risk of scarring and dark spots.

How Is Acne Treated?

There is no single acne treatment that works for everyone. Improvement usually takes time and consistency, and the right treatment depends on the type and severity of acne, your skin type, previous treatments, and other individual factors.

Your dermatology provider may recommend treatments such as:

    • Benzoyl Peroxide: Helps reduce acne-causing bacteria and prevent clogged pores and inflammatory breakouts.

    • Topical Medications: Prescription creams or gels may be used to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and prevent new breakouts.

    • Topical or Oral Antibiotics: May be prescribed for certain types of inflammatory acne to help reduce bacteria and inflammation.

    • Retinoids: Vitamin A-derived medications, including tretinoin, can help prevent clogged pores and are commonly incorporated into acne treatment plans.

    • Hormonal Therapy: Certain hormonal treatments may be appropriate for women whose acne is influenced by hormonal changes.

    • Oral Medications: Moderate to severe or persistent acne may require additional prescription medications when topical treatments alone are not effective.

    • Professional Extraction: In appropriate cases, a dermatology professional may safely remove certain blackheads or whiteheads using specialized techniques.

How Is Acne Treated?

If acne is persistent, painful, worsening, causing scars, or affecting your confidence, a dermatology evaluation can help determine the appropriate next steps. Professional treatment may also be beneficial when over-the-counter acne products have not provided adequate improvement.

At UDermic Health, our dermatology providers develop individualized acne treatment plans based on your skin, the type of acne you are experiencing, and your treatment goals. Addressing acne early can help control current breakouts, prevent new ones, and reduce the risk of long-term scarring.
